Hobart Rivulet and Cascade Gardens

This peaceful trail follows the Hobart Rivulet from the edge of the city up toward Cascade Gardens and the foothills of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. It’s a gentle, easy walk that’s great for families, bikes and dogs on lead. Along the way you might spot platypus in the water and pass historic sites like the Cascades Female Factory. At the top, take a break at Cascade Gardens or visit the nearby brewery. It’s a relaxed walk that combines nature and history close to the city.
GASP Trail
Distance: 3.2km
Elevation Gain: 20m
Approximate duration: 45 minutes
The Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park (GASP) trail is a short, accessible walk that combines water views, public art and peaceful surrounds. Starting from Elwick Bay and finishing at Wilkinsons Point, the trail includes sculptures, birdwatching spots and wide footpaths. There are toilets at the end of the trail, and plenty of space for a relaxed walk.
Clarence Foreshore Trail (Bellerive to Howrah section)
Distance: 3km one way
Approximate duration: 1 hour
This coastal section of the Clarence Foreshore Trail offers sweeping views of the Derwent River, open parklands and direct access to beaches. You can begin at Bellerive Beach and walk south to Howrah, enjoying playgrounds, BBQ areas and cafes along the way. Walk the beach, follow the paved trail or do both. Great for prams, kids and a relaxed morning walk.
Alum Cliffs Track
Distance: 6.8km return
Elevation Gain: 300m
Approximate duration: 2 – 2.5 hours
Located just south of Hobart, this track offers dramatic coastal views and bushland surrounds. The walk starts at the Christopher Johnson Memorial Park in Taroona and includes some stairs and uneven surfaces, but it’s still suitable for most walkers. Along the way, you’ll pass through eucalyptus forest, spot native birds and enjoy views of the Derwent River. Make time to visit the Shot Tower nearby for a coffee and a climb.
Risdon Brook Dam Circuit
Distance: 4.5km
Elevation Gain: 70m
Approximate duration: 1 – 1.5 hours
This flat, family-friendly trail circles the peaceful Risdon Brook Dam. The path is wide and well-maintained, making it great for walkers of all ages. There’s also a playground, picnic areas and BBQ facilities at the start, so you can turn your walk into a half-day outing. Look out for wallabies, ducks and the occasional echidna.
Bonus: Seven Mile Beach
Distance: Up to 11km (7 miles)
